Five more states—Arkansas, Missouri, South Dakota, Utah and Virginia—have received waivers from certain provisions of No Child Left Behind (NCLB).
Notably, Virginia has not adopted the Common Core State Standards, and still received the waiver. The Department of Education has stated that college- and career-ready standards (though not necessarily the Common Core) must be adopted by states applying for waivers.
Twenty-four states have now been granted waivers by the U.S. Department of Education, and an additional 13 states are awaiting approval.
