“It’s time to foreclose on the bankrupt promises of pay for performance policies and move on to ideas that have a better chance for success,” writes Mike Connolly in the Speaking Out column, “Perils of Pay for Performance,” in the Sept/Oct issue of Principal magazine. Connolly, a former principal, argues that pay for performance systems do not work in education and they hamper—rather than foster—creativity and experimentation.
