Pay for Performance Debate Continues

“It’s time to foreclose on the bankrupt promises of pay for performance policies and move on to ideas that have a better chance for success,” writes Mike Connolly in the Speaking Out column, “Perils of Pay for Performance,” in the Sept/Oct issue of Principal magazine. Connolly, a former principal, argues that pay for performance systems do not work in education and they hamper—rather than foster—creativity and experimentation.

Connolly also writes that policymakers “should listen to what educators say they need to get better results from students.” What say you, principals? What are your thoughts on pay for performance? What are alternative solutions for getting better results?
