Senate Votes Down Teacher Portion of Jobs Act

Update: On October 20, the Senate failed to secure the necessary votes to move The Teachers and First Responders Act forward. All Republicans voted no as did Joe Lieberman (I-CT), Ben Nelson (D-NE), and Mark Pryor (D-AR). See how your Senator voted here.

The legislation would have provided $30 billion to states to prevent layoffs of public school K-12 employees and to rehire educators laid off during the economic downturn. The bill also set aside $5 billion for police and firefighter jobs.

This was the first debate on an individual component of President Obama’s American Jobs Act since the larger bill failed to gain the necessary support from 60 senators last week. See how your senator voted on the larger package by clicking here.
