NAESP Presents Research Award to Bonnie L. Tryon
The National Association of Elementary School Principals recognizes the New York educator for her dissertation on mentoring.
Alexandria, VA—September 10, 2013—The National Association of Elementary Schools Principals (NAESP) has announced Bonnie L. Tryon as the winner of its 2013 Ernest L. Boyer Dissertation Competition. The award is for Tryon’s research, Assessing the Collaborative Conversations Between Mentor Coaches and School Administrators: A Qualitative Study. The competition attracts dissertations from educational leaders throughout the United States and is designed to highlight outstanding research on leadership practices for elementary school principals.
The findings in Tryon’s study, that meaningful collaboration results in meaningful change, underscores the critical importance of the design of professional development programs for educators in this time of reduced budgets, especially as it relates to mentoring and coaching.
“Dr. Tryon’s work greatly contributes to our understanding of how to implement successful principal mentoring programs,” said NAESP Executive Director Gail Connelly. “Her findings support NAESP’s commitment to leadership growth and learning opportunities for our nation’s principals.”
Tryon completed her research in May 2012 as the culmination of an Ed.D. program in Instructional Leadership at Nova Southeastern University. A former principal, Tryon now works as an educational consultant in Cobleskill, New York. She also serves as a certified mentor coach with NAESP’s National Principal Mentor Certification program.
Tryon has extensive experience in educational leadership, including serving as principal of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School in Verona, New York, and director of elementary education for the Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School in Cobleskill, New York.
Tryon’s numerous honors and awards include being selected as an NAESP National Distinguished Principal and the New York State Elementary Principal of the Year (both in 2007), and serving as president of the School Administrators Association of New York State (2007-2009). She also served on NAESP’s Board of Directors from 2002 to 2005.

About the Award
The Ernest L. Boyer Dissertation Competition recognizes outstanding research on leadership focused at the elementary school level. The competition is open to doctoral students who have completed and successfully defended their dissertation. Research is presented to a panel of education experts for the judging process. The winner receives a commemorative plaque, a cash award, and a year-long membership to NAESP.
