NAESP's Statement on Secretary Duncan's Resignation

Alexandria, Virginia—Oct. 2, 2015—NAESP issued the following statement on U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan’s announcement to step down in December:

“NAESP commends Secretary Duncan for his efforts to improve the nation’s education system over the past several years. While we have not always seen eye-to-eye on policy, we have agreed with the Secretary on his unwavering commitment to children and ensuring that every student has the opportunity to access a high-quality education,” said Gail Connelly, NAESP executive director. “His work over the past three years in particular has focused on bringing about greater federal recognition and support for the role of principals, and we commend him for addressing building the capacity of principals. We know the impact of a strong school leader, especially for schools with the greatest needs,” she added.

On behalf of the nation’s pre-K-8 principals, we look forward to working with John B. King, Jr. to continue this important facet of the Department of Education’s efforts, and putting into place the necessary support systems for principal leadership so that every child will receive a well-rounded educational experience.
