Alexandria, VA—July 12, 2010—Principals from across the nation will converge on Capitol Hill to advance a legislative proposal on professional development for the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) as a part of the National Association of Elementary School Principals’ (NAESP) National Leaders Conference. The purpose of the National Leaders Conference is for education leaders to set state and national priorities for public education and to lobby federal legislators about current education issues.

WHO: Elementary and middle-level educators and leaders from across the nation

WHAT: Advocating on Capitol Hill for ESEA reauthorization that would provide principals with policies to help them turn around schools and would provide them high-quality professional development in early childhood education

WHY: To ensure that legislators understand the full implications of federal policies on principals’ abilities to increase student achievement, principals will be taking the following messages to Capitol Hill: Oppose the automatic replacement of principals as a means of school turnaround efforts without first evaluating the principals’ and schools’ circumstances, preserve formula funding, and provide high-quality professional development, especially for principals who are engaged in pre-K through grade 3 learning.

WHEN and WHERE: Thursday, July 16, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., various congressional offices on Capitol Hill

HOW: For more information about these policy issues, to interview principals about their congressional meetings, or to locate principals from particular states or districts, please contact Kaylen Tucker (ktucker@naesp.org or 703-518-6257).

NOTES: Principals may be interviewed after their congressional appointments on July 15 or at the J.W. Marriott Hotel on Friday, July 16.
