BEING AN EFFECTIVE PRE-K-3RD GRADE PRINCIPAL

This webinar will provide an overview of NAESP's newly released and updated Leading Learning Communities: A Principal's Guide to Early Learning and the Early Grades (Pre-K—3rd Grade). This guide is intended to encourage elementary principals to deepen their own knowledge and skills related to Pre-K-3rd grade, and to provide specific guidance for principals to become more effective leaders on behalf of young children. Effective leadership of Pre-K-3rd grade requires substantive expertise about child development and instructional practices that support young learners.

LEADING FOR LITERACY: PROMOTING CODE-BASED LITERACY SKILLS IN EARLY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Join Jess Surles, M.Ed., and Lauren Artzi, Ph.D. for the fifth installment of the NAESP-Lead for Literacy Center series. This session will focus on instructional evidence-based practices aimed at promoting children’s decoding and word reading. For successful reading, a child needs to have skills that allow them to decode the words (code-based skills) and skills that allow them to understand and comprehend the text and understand what the words mean (meaning-level skills). Therefore, high-quality explicit and systematic reading instruction involves the use of evidence-based practices across all tiers of instruction and promotes the learning of both code-based and meaning-level skills. In this session, presenters will discuss key considerations for implementing evidence-based practices to support children’s decoding and word reading in both traditional and virtual learning environments.
Participants will:
- Learn about the critical components of code-based instruction and evidence-based practices to promote word reading and decoding.

In the seventh installment of the Lead for Literacy series, join Ursula Hill, Ed.D., and Jennifer Pierce, Ph.D. from the Lead for Literacy Center as they discuss critical components of high-quality professional development for effective school-wide reading programs, key considerations for job-embedded learning and coaching, and effective collaboration structures for professional learning. Participants will then have the opportunity to develop a well-articulated professional development plan that incorporates key actions for planning, delivering, and evaluating professional development using data sources. The plan will also guide prioritization of needs and goals, identification of resources, and the consideration of funding streams to provide differentiated new knowledge to support teachers and improve student learning and behavior outcomes.
Participants will:
- Recognize features of high-quality professional development by highlighting use data and time.
- Discuss potential obstacles in professional development and considerations to address the obstacles.
- Identify the strengths and stretches of professional development and coaching practices within your school/district that lead to data-based decision-making.
