LEADING FOR LITERACY: PROMOTING MEANING-LEVEL LITERACY SKILLS IN EARLY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Join Jess Surles, M.Ed., and Lauren Artzi, Ph.D. as they present the sixth session in the NAESP-Lead for Literacy Center series. This session is focused on promoting children’s language and meaning-level literacy skills in early elementary school. For successful reading, a child needs to have skills that allow them to decode the words (code-based skills) and skills that allow them to understand and comprehend the text and understand what the words mean (meaning-level skills). As a follow up to the March 25th session Promoting Code-based Literacy Skills in Early Elementary School, this session will focus on the use of evidence-based practices for promoting elementary-aged children’s academic language, vocabulary, and comprehension in both traditional and virtual learning environments. Presenters will also discuss key considerations for using EBPs to support comprehension and language across all tiers of instruction.

Participants will:

  • Discuss important components and evidence-based practices related to literacy instruction that supports student comprehension, vocabulary, and academic language.
  • Access web-based tools and resources to support implementation of evidence-based literacy practices by school staff and students.

THE MINDS OF BOYS AND GIRLS: LEARNING THROUGH A GENDER LENS

WHAT PRINCIPALS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT IMPLICIT RACIAL BIAS

Dr. Sylvia Perry (Assistant Professor of Psychology, Northwestern University) from Project Implicit will be presenting a webinar on Wednesday, April 28th from 11am to 12pm EDT. The objectives of the webinar are to raise awareness of our biases; to explore how researchers measure and understand identity-based biases; and to provide actionable steps that we as educators can take to prevent and mitigate the impact of biases. The webinar will include a live demonstration of an Implicit Association Test as well as the opportunity to create an "action plan" to implement the key takeaways. LEADING FOR LITERACY: TAKING A DEEP DIVE INTO PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT STRUCTURES

In the seventh installment of the Lead for Literacy series, join Ursula Hill, Ed.D., and Jennifer Pierce, Ph.D. from the Lead for Literacy Center as they discuss critical components of high-quality professional development for effective school-wide reading programs, key considerations for job-embedded learning and coaching, and effective collaboration structures for professional learning. Participants will then have the opportunity to develop a well-articulated professional development plan that incorporates key actions for planning, delivering, and evaluating professional development using data sources. The plan will also guide prioritization of needs and goals, identification of resources, and the consideration of funding streams to provide differentiated new knowledge to support teachers and improve student learning and behavior outcomes.

Participants will:

  • Recognize features of high-quality professional development by highlighting use data and time.
  • Discuss potential obstacles in professional development and considerations to address the obstacles.
  • Identify the strengths and stretches of professional development and coaching practices within your school/district that lead to data-based decision-making.
