LEADING FOR LITERACY: PROMOTING CODE-BASED LITERACY SKILLS IN EARLY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Join Jess Surles, M.Ed., and Lauren Artzi, Ph.D. for the fifth installment of the NAESP-Lead for Literacy Center series. This session will focus on instructional evidence-based practices aimed at promoting children’s decoding and word reading. For successful reading, a child needs to have skills that allow them to decode the words (code-based skills) and skills that allow them to understand and comprehend the text and understand what the words mean (meaning-level skills). Therefore, high-quality explicit and systematic reading instruction involves the use of evidence-based practices across all tiers of instruction and promotes the learning of both code-based and meaning-level skills. In this session, presenters will discuss key considerations for implementing evidence-based practices to support children’s decoding and word reading in both traditional and virtual learning environments.
Participants will:
- Learn about the critical components of code-based instruction and evidence-based practices to promote word reading and decoding.
- Access web-based tools and resources to support implementation of evidence-based literacy practices by school staff and students.

BEING AN EFFECTIVE PRE-K-3RD GRADE PRINCIPAL
This webinar will provide an overview of NAESP's newly released and updated Leading Learning Communities: A Principal's Guide to Early Learning and the Early Grades (Pre-K—3rd Grade). This guide is intended to encourage elementary principals to deepen their own knowledge and skills related to Pre-K-3rd grade, and to provide specific guidance for principals to become more effective leaders on behalf of young children. Effective leadership of Pre-K-3rd grade requires substantive expertise about child development and instructional practices that support young learners.

PRESIDENT'S EDUCATION AWARDS PROGRAM (PEAP), A GREAT WAY TO RECOGNIZE GRADUATES FOR THEIR HARD WORK!

LEADING FOR LITERACY: HIGHLIGHTING KEY CONSIDERATIONS FOR MONITORING READING PROGRESS AND USING LITERACY ASSESSMENT
As a follow up to November 19th’s session Leading for Literacy: Highlighting Key Considerations for Literacy Screening and Assessment, join David Fainstein, M.A, and Lauren Artizi Ph.D., from the Lead for Literacy Center as they discuss types of progress monitoring data that inform reading instruction and review the quality indicators of useful data and assessments. They will share the purpose and process for monitoring students’ reading progress in both traditional and virtual settings and highlight important components of data-based decision making using school teaming structures.
Participants will:
- Recognize features of research-informed practices for monitoring reading progress.
- Describe barriers and solutions that impact assessment and progress monitoring implementation.
- Identify the strengths and stretches of progress monitoring assessment practices within your school/district that lead to data-based decision-making.

LEADING FOR LITERACY: SUPPORTING EARLY LITERACY INSTRUCTION PRE-K TO 3
Join Jill Pentimonti, Ph.D. and Lana Santoro, Ph.D. as they overview the TeacherRead Program and key considerations for literacy learning in preschool/early childhood contexts that set a strong basis for later language learning and academic success, including promoting oral language, phonological awareness, and print knowledge. Lana Santoro will provide a brief overview of a seven-year, federally funded project to promote teacher read alouds for enhancing narrative and expository comprehension, vocabulary, and language development of children in grades K-2. She will outline the components of instruction and highlight critical instructional delivery look fors. She will also discuss use of a professional learning community structure to support implementation. Presenters will engage participants in discussion related to what school leaders can do to promote evidence-based instruction in preK and early elementary school.
Participants will:
- Learn about the critical components of oral language and vocabulary, print knowledge, and phonological awareness as key skills for literacy learning in young learners.
